Creative Writing UK Style For American Writers

If you are a United States writer who wants to try creative writing UK style, or have been assigned to do such a project, there are some things you should know first. While the basics of construction, pacing and format are the same, many of the words used are different. In addition to slang used in the United Kingdom, everyday words are often spelled differently than they are in the United States. And, a word may have a different meaning in the UK than it does in the U.S.

The best way to surmount these obstacles if you are not a UK native with a grasp of the language is to study it. There are plenty of online resources that list slang as well as common words and phrases. For example, if you were to write the word airplane in a UK piece you would spell it aeroplane. Depending on what you are writing, it helps to get a sense of how natives speak so you can write in a way that reaches them personally. For a piece that will be read in the UK you need a UK writing voice.

This is not impossible for an American writer to develop, but it can be difficult. The smaller the piece the easier it will be. For example a single article written in English creative writing style would be much easier to successfully complete than a long paper or book. In a lot of cases, words used in the United States are very similar to those in the UK with a simple difference. For example, color would be colour and center would be centre. All you need is a handy resource to make sure your spelling and phrasing is correct.

Although creative writing UK style can be challenging, it may be necessary in some cases. If you are a freelance writer you may land a project from a UK client who wants this type of writing. Or, you may be writing a piece of fiction based in this part of the world and need accurate dialogue and spelling. There are even university programs abroad in the UK for American writers who want to take their education further and learn skills abroad. Not only that, but you can enjoy learning about and experiencing a new culture that is similar, yet different, to the United States.
